Lake Luzerne, Warren County
Adirondack Park, Northern New York
My Gram, Marguerite Edna Bennett Eldridge, was born in Lake Luzerne in 1910 and raised on Gailey Hill Rd., off what is now 9N. She was the eldest of 7 children (4 boys and 3 girls). They grew up on a small farm/homestead, in the shadow of Potash Mtn. and attended this one-room schoolhouse, which is now located in town, near the old tannery by Mill Creek.
After she graduated from school in 1928, she, along with her best friend Celestia Hall, walked back and forth from Gailey Hill to Palmer Ave. in Corinth, day after day, to attend a higher learning course, so she could receive her teaching degree. Celestia just walked with her and waited, the good friend she was, and continued to be throughout their long lives!
After receiving her degree, she went back to this schoolhouse to teach. At that time, the schoolhouse was still located on Gailey Hill.
