ALPL’s Capital of the Month: Speculator

Charlie Johns Store

When you visit Speculator, make it a point to pay a visit to
111 Elm Lake Rd., aka the iconic Charlie Johns, a true Adirondack store!
Established in 1939 at the Four Corners (intersection of Routes 8, 30 and Elm Lake Rd.) by Charles H. Johns as a grocery/general store, CJS celebrated 80 years of service in 2019!
After serving the community for over 30 years, Charlie sold his business to Dean Lane in 1971. In the 80’s Dean expanded his business, moving to a new building behind its original location. He expanded the Grocery and General Store sections, and introduced a Deli and a Bakery as well! All while successfully maintaining that Adirondack Country Store look and feel.
A family affair it was, with the help of Dean’s three daughters through their school years, along with his son Jonathan, who now after their father’s passing in 2013, owns and is in charge of CJS’s daily operations. The Lane’s and their staff continue to honor Mr. Johns initial vision, benefitting the surrounding community and passerby alike…🌲
